I Took the Dam Picture – A Visit to Hoover Dam

Dear Henry,

Here I am at Hoover Dam.

You told me I couldn’t miss it, so I came. And I will say this right up front: it was really crowded at the dam.

Crowded, loud, and a little claustrophobic,  especially the tour, which packs people into tight interior spaces while explaining feats of engineering in a way that somehow makes the walls feel closer. I had already seen Hoover Dam as a kid, and I remembered it being big and impressive, but I don’t think I remembered how overwhelming it feels when everyone in America seems to be seeing it at the exact same moment you are.

That said.

It is a damn engineering marvel.

The scale of it is undeniable. The ambition behind it is staggering. Standing there, looking at concrete poured into the desert to tame a river and power cities, it’s impossible not to feel a certain awe, even if it’s mixed with impatience, sweat, and the desire to escape the crowd.

At the same time, I couldn’t stop thinking about Lake Mead. About the visible waterline. About the ecological cost baked into this achievement. It’s hard not to see Hoover Dam as both triumph and warning,  a monument to what humans can build, and a quiet reminder of the consequences that follow.

So yes. I took the picture.

Here is a dam picture.

I suppose that is enough dams.

xoxo,
